This project was all about designing a new Animas high school. The whole freshman class was divided into 4 rooms and in each room had 4 groups. The groups had 4 to 5 people each. We had to design a school that all users would like and could use, we interviewed a bunch of people from 8th grade to 12th and teachers to parents. The reason why we interviewed these people was to find a problem or problems that needed to be fixed. We also observed upper-class man classes to see how they acted and why do we think they acted like that.Once we figured out why they act the way they did we brainstormed a bunch of ideas of what we could add or take away from the school to change that. During this project I learned that doing a project this big and having the smallest group is very challenging we all had to take on extra work, some of us did more than others. One thing that I did was the construction budgeting. That might sound really easy but it wasn’t! I had to find all the materials we wanted to put in one room so that was from the floor to wall paneling to furniture to what shingles we wanted on the roof. And then I had to find prices for everything, once I found the prices I had to figure out how much of that I need to cover the space needed. What I learned from construction budgeting was one it’s not as easy as it seems, two it’s very important to do not just to know what the price is but to figure out what material is better or what would be the cheaper way to go even if it leads to changing your plan a little, three doing it alone is difficult especially when you don't know your group members that well and you don't really know what they would want, and four when you are making a budget to fit a room and someone is building the same room make sure you are using the same materials and the same amount. Communication is the key to everything!!!! I think our group worked pretty good together, it would have been easier if it was more than 3 people because we wouldn’t be as stressed out to get things done on time. I wished that I would have talked to the group more, it would have made my job a little bit easier and I would have done less work than I ended up doing. Doing this project with the group that I was put with I think helped me with my working in group skills because generally when I am put in groups it’s a big one so I don’t have to talk and I hardly do anything. Being put in a small group to where I had to interact with and be apart of helped me learn how i'm supposed to work in a group and that I don't have to be afraid that i'm going to do one thing and the other members don't like it. My work that I do is greatly appreciated even if it does end up being changed a little bit. I think students having a say in what the schools look like is a great thing because most schools look and feel like prisons, so having a students perspective on the school I think will make the school run better. Students know what environment they work best in. If that can be added into a school us as students might be more open to learn and coming to school.
